Dr. Timothy Purnell will serve as the Executive Director of the American Montessori Society beginning on August 1, 2017. Prior to AMS, Dr. Purnell served as the Superintendent of Somerville Schools and on the NJ State Board of Examiners for six years, superintendent of Harding Township for three years, and as as a principal, vice principal, and science teacher. Dr. Purnell also serves as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Centenary University, and Georgian Court University.
Dr. Purnell ‘s research, entitled No Transient Child Left Behind, studied the link between student transience and standardized test scores on a global and local level. He was featured on the NY Times Room for Debate (2015). He has presented nationally and has served as a keynote speaker. Dr. Purnell was acknowledged as an ASCD Emerging Leader and has received the You Make a Difference Award, Phoenix Award, Governor’s Teaching Recognition Award, Weston Teaching in Excellence Award. He received a Geraldine Dodge Fellowship School Leadership Award to study the Italian educational system. He submitted his first blog entry in 2008 and his first tweet in 2009 (@SchoolSup). Dr. Purnell’s blog was given a Top School District Blog Award.
Dr. Purnell attended the ConnectEd #FutureReady Superintendents Summit at the White House with President Obama, Secretary Duncan, and 100 other superintendents from across the US. His district is nationally recognized as a District of Distinction. In 2015, he was selected as the NJ State Superintendent of the Year and the Highest Rated Professor in the nation and in 2016, he was selected as the NASS Superintendent of the Year.
